CJC Portfolio refrences

Career Portfolio References

Portfolio Power: The New Way to Showcase All Your Job Skills and Experiences
by Martin Kimeldorf; Peterson’s, 1997
(Perhaps the most complete of the few books available on “career” portfolios. Published early in the history of “career” portfolios and contains the germ of many ideas and concepts commonly found in career portfolios now. Out of print, but available online through Amazon.)

The Career Portfolio Workbook
by Frank Satterthwaite and Gary D’Orsi; McGraw-Hill, 2003
A relatively new resource, full of the background and philosophy of career portfolios, and especially useful to students. Also contains good examples of portfolios with notes. Very comprehensive.

Creating Your Skills Portfolio: Show Your Accomplishments
by Carrie Straub; Crisp Publications, Inc., 1997
(Designed for Crisp's 50-minute series; basics are covered, and instruction on how to deal with graphics is particularly good. Reprinted at least once since the first publication.)

Creating Your Career Portfolio: At a Glance Guide
by Anna Graf Williams and Karen J. Hall; Prentice-Hall, Inc., 1997
(This reference has been re-published several times, and it improves each time, containing more ideas and more examples. However, most examples come from the hospitality industry and it seems particularly aimed at students.)

Creating Portfolios for Success in School, Work, and Life
by Martin Kimeldorf; Free Spirit Publishing, 1994
(Written specifically for high school students, but relevant beyond the age group and is particularly strong in the information on ways to present graphics.)

Creating your Life's Work Portfolio: An Interactive Career and Life Planning Workbook by the editors of JIST, JIST Works, Inc., 1998
(Portfolios are a part of this book on planning for one's life. It also has been re-published and has grown in size.)

Building Your Career Portfolio
by Carol A. Poore; Career Press, 2001
Modeled on an investment portfolio and takes the approach that each of us must consider having more than one source of income, just as a broad-based financial portfolio would. She uses a financial portfolio analogy to describe one’s portfolio of skills and make the case for diversifying. Her focus is on defining a personal purpose which is supported by one’s collection of skills and time investment. Does not discuss the form or format of “career portfolio” as commonly understood.

How to Develop a Professional Portfolio: A Manual for Teachers
by Campbell, Cignetti, Melenyzer,Nettles, and Wyman; Allyn and Bacon, 2001
A resource for helping educators design their portfolios around ten teaching standards.

Proof of Performance: How to Build a Career Portfolio to Land a Great New Job
by Rick Nelles; Impact Publications, 2001
Written from the perspective of a recruiter, Nelles focuses on helping interviewees increase their ability to validate the claims of their skills and experience, and on using the visual format of the career portfolio to add impact to their interviews.

A Guide to Portfolios: Creating and Using Portfolios for Academic, Career and Personal Success by Mary Robins, 2002
Particularly good resource on the terminology of career portfolios and how to focus on a particular audience for each portfolio.
Online References to Portfolios (particularly programs at colleges and universities)
and to Career Portfolios

Get A Life: Your Personal Planning Portfolio
designed jointly by the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) and the National Occupational Information Coordinating Committee (NOICC), it has four sections -- self-knowledge, life roles, educational development, and career exploration and planning -- designed to help students organize the basics of their career/life planning. Available through ASCA Website, http://www.noicc.gov/files/ngetlife.html )

Creating a Digital Portfolio: A Guide to Marketing and Self-Promotion
by Cynthia Baron; Hayden Books, 1996
Characteristic of many books on portfolios written by a graphic designer, it focuses on the manipulation and presentation of graphics, and assumes that readers are capable of a fairly high level of electronic technology.

Portfolios for Development: A Guide for Trainers and Managers
by Warren Redman; Nichols Publishing Co., 1994
Written for business managers, to help employees see their own strengths and weaknesses, so they could embark on self-directed self-improvement. Does not spend much time on the format or presentation of the portfolio.

“The American Association for Higher Education (http://www.aahe.org/ )
maintains a Portfolio Clearinghouse ( http://www.aahe.org/teaching/portfolio_db.htm ),
a searchable collection of information on portfolio usage in higher education. The information in the database includes basic details such as the name of the institution, the contact person, and the URL for the portfolio's Web site. Additional information includes the scope of the portfolio project, the reasons for initiating the portfolios, the format (paper or digital), a summary of general results, and reflections on the institution's experience with the portfolio project. There are currently 51 institutions listed in the database.”
